Ernesto Fernandez Nogueras

1950s

As a young man Ernesto Fernandez witnessed both the excesses of Havana in its heyday, and the poverty that provided a hotbed for revolutionary thought.  He was in the Cuban capital as the revolution reached its climax and was swept up in the exhiliarating times.  His pictures document a time when hope outstripped reality.  They are more than observations, they are celebrations of the possibilities of youth’s ability to bring change.  To throw out the old ways of doing things and to reinvent a new world.
