Soweto strings

Buskaid is a wonderful school of string music in the district of Diepkloof, a part of the sprawling Soweto township outside Johannesberg in South Africa.  The school was established by the British viola player Rosemary Nalden in 1997 and now has approximately 80 students ranging from five year olds to twenty-nine.  “To sit amongst them and hear them create music, or to watch the teenagers patiently teaching the younger students is an inspiring experience” says James.

The images have been exhibited in New York at Soho House and were shortlisted for the Sony World Photographic awards in 2009.  A percentage of all sales is donated to the Buskaid foundation.
